Fresh flowers can completely change the feeling of a space. They bring warmth, softness, beauty, and a little bit of joy into everyday life. But flowers are living things, and the way you care for them makes a much bigger difference than most people realize.
With proper care, many flowers can stay beautiful for days — and sometimes even twice as long. A little attention can completely change the lifespan of your arrangement.
Here are a few simple tips to help your flowers stay fresh and happy for as long as possible.
Trim the stems
One of the first things you should do after receiving your flowers is trim the stems.
Cut about ½–1 inch from the bottom of each stem at an angle (around 45°). This helps flowers absorb water more easily. Over time, stem ends naturally begin to dry out and seal, making it harder for flowers to drink.
For best results, re-trim the stems every 2–3 days.
Note: Flowers can become “thirsty” very quickly — even being out of water for a short period of time can affect their lifespan. That’s also why we deliver our bouquets in aqua boxes, helping flowers stay hydrated and fresh during transportation.
Change the water regularly
Fresh water matters more than most people think.
Flowers sit in water all day, and bacteria naturally begin to build up over time. These bacteria can block stems and prevent flowers from absorbing the water they need.
We recommend:
✓ Change the water every 1–2 days
✓ Clean the vase if needed
✓ Remove any leaves sitting below the water line
Keeping the water fresh can often add several extra days to your arrangement.
Use flower food
We include flower food with every order — don’t throw it away 😊 It actually helps more than many people realize.
Flower food is designed to nourish flowers, keep the water cleaner for longer, and slow down the growth of bacteria that can shorten a bouquet’s lifespan.
If you change the water, add a fresh packet if one is available.
Note: Flower food usually contains a combination of sugar (to feed flowers), acid (to help stems absorb water more effectively), and ingredients that help reduce bacteria growth.
Keep flowers away from direct sunlight and heat
Many people instinctively place flowers near a sunny window, but flowers actually prefer cooler conditions.
Direct sunlight, heaters, kitchen heat, and warm temperatures can cause flowers to open too quickly and shorten their life.
The ideal environment for fresh flowers is:
✓ Bright room with indirect light
✓ Cool temperature
✓ Away from radiators and heating vents
Keep flowers away from fruit
This surprises a lot of people.
Certain fruits — especially bananas, apples, avocados, and pears — release a natural gas called ethylene as they ripen.
Ethylene speeds up the aging process of flowers and can make blooms wilt much faster.
So while flowers may look beautiful in the kitchen, try not to place them directly next to a fruit bowl.
Your flowers may literally live longer because of it.
Remove fading blooms
As flowers naturally age, some blooms may begin fading before others.
Removing wilted flowers helps keep the arrangement looking fresh and also allows the remaining flowers to receive more water and energy.
Think of it as a small refresh for your bouquet.
Every flower has its own personality
One of the beautiful things about flowers is that they all behave differently.
Some flowers bloom immediately, while others slowly open over several days.
Peonies can arrive tightly closed and transform dramatically within a day or two.
Hydrangeas love water and drink a lot.
Roses may continue opening and become larger and softer over time.
Tulips can actually continue growing even after being cut — sometimes up to 1–2 inches in a vase, and they naturally move toward light throughout the day.
Flowers are constantly changing — and that’s part of their beauty.
A little care makes a big difference
Flowers are temporary, and maybe that’s exactly what makes them special.
With just a few simple steps, you can enjoy them longer and keep that beautiful feeling in your home, office, or space for days to come.
Take care of your flowers, and they’ll take care of the atmosphere around you.
With love,
BETWEEN FLOWERS 🌿
